Keynote
Nate "Utah" Scott
Former Blue Angel #4, Slot Pilot
Where Safety Meets Performance: Elevating Operations Through Trust, Precision, and Execution
In the Blue Angels formation, the #4 position flies directly beneath the team. At 500 miles per hour, the margin for error is measured in inches. Every person in that formation is accountable to every other person in it. There is no version of that environment where safety and performance are separate ideas.
Nate “Utah” Scott flew that seat. He was also the team’s Training Officer, responsible for developing new pilots and holding the standard on every flight, not just the ones that went perfectly.
His message is not about aviation. It is about what high-stakes environments reveal about safety culture, and what it actually takes to build one that holds when the pressure is highest.
Nate draws on one of the most clarifying moments of his career, a failure significant enough to have ended it, and what that moment taught him about how teams that prioritize safety actually function. Not through perfection, but through the discipline of honest debrief, the courage to surface what went wrong before something worse follows, and the kind of psychological safety that makes accountability possible in the first place.
For safety professionals who carry responsibility for other people’s lives every day, this session connects the principles of elite performance directly to the culture you are trying to build and sustain.
What You’ll Walk Away With
- A framework for building safety culture through accountability and trust rather than compliance alone
- A practical approach to debriefing near-misses and incidents in ways that strengthen your team and actually prevent the next one
- A clearer understanding of how psychological safety and operational precision reinforce each other
- A renewed perspective on what safety leadership looks like when the standard is non-negotiable and the stakes are real
