Event Summary
This course is designed for PSMS stakeholders at every level, this course will explore the development of the API RP 1173 (RP 1173), 2nd Edition; focusing on what is changing in the next version of the recommended practice and when it is likely to be published.
Participants will gain a high-level understanding of how the new 2nd Edition including the changes to individual PSMS Element requirements, changes to how Safety Culture is conveyed in the new version, and a brief overview of the three new Annexes (Process Safety, Small Operator Implementation, and Public Engagement.
Emphasis is placed on how Safety Culture is now embedded within all ten of the PSMS elements. The discussion will also reinforce several existing principles that are not changing in the 2nd Edition, including, the requirement that operators have a ‘documented’ plan for engaging and communicating with internal and external stakeholders, management of change, use of contractors, communicating lessons learned, using audits, assessments, and evaluations to drive conformance an effectiveness, use of Management Reviews to drive accountability and continuous improvement, emergency planning, training for those whose jobs are driven by PSMS requirements, and the effective document and record controls.
Attendees will receive 2 Professional Development Hours (PDH) upon completion.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the changes occurring in the 2nd Edition of API RP 1173, including the changes to the elements and how those changes can affect organizational policies, processes, and support systems.
- Describe how Safety Culture will be embedded within each of the ten PSMS elements.
- Gain an understanding of how the three new Annexes are designed to be used.
- Discuss PSMS for non-operating and shared services roles

Personnel accountable for the implementation, execution, and administration of the company’s PSMS, leaders supporting PSMS personnel, and personnel heading into new PSMS administrative roles.
