When Is “Compliant” Not Good Enough?

Virtual, Instructor-Led

Event Summary

Learning outcomes:

Engineers will be able to:

  • Distinguish between minimum regulatory compliance and the engineer’s broader professional responsibility for public safety.
  • Apply ethical reasoning when technical information is incomplete, conflicting, uncertain, or evolving.
  • Evaluate ethical issues involving pipeline integrity, MAOP, records, GIS and asset-location accuracy, corrosion, leak management, construction inspection, damage prevention, and management of change.
  • Recognize when assumptions, historical practices, missing records, or data limitations require additional investigation.
  • Determine appropriate action when technical evidence indicates a credible risk even when regulatory requirements appear to have been satisfied.
  • Properly document engineering assumptions, uncertainty, dissenting opinions, and decision rationale.
  • Determine when professional responsibility requires additional technical review, escalation, or stopping work.

Core question: If the regulation says you can, but your engineering judgment says you shouldn’t, what is your obligation?
